Women in today’s society put more pressure on themselves than ever before. From television shows to magazine spreads, women constantly criticize themselves. Not only do women feel an endless amount of pressure to look a certain way, but the bar has also been raised in terms of academics and careers.

Today, women take on much more than they have in the past. There is more to them than just being the caretakers of the family. Women have high-salary executive jobs and in some cases are the breadwinners of the family. Women working in these managerial positions are more likely to feel stressed.

People who are exposed to chronic and high levels of stress are more likely to develop coronary heart disease, which can also lead to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart attacks.

Women’s Health magazine recently conducted a survey and found that women are subjected to feeling more physical symptoms of stress than men.

Brittnee McGuire, assistant coach of the women’s soccer team at Utica College, has seen and experienced first hand the pressure women put on themselves. McGuire graduated from Elmira College where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in childhood education and sociology with a minor in anthropology.

“Women constantly try to prove themselves and refuse to ask for help,” McGuire said.

Women today tend to take on a lot at once: various classes, playing multiple sports, working, keeping up with relationships and joining extracurricular activities are a few examples. More times than not, women try to balance and manage all of these things, which create stress and feelings of being overwhelmed.

Women also have different ways of coping with stress than men do. When men get worked up or stressed about a situation they often would rather let things go and relax, according to an article on USAToday.com.

“Women tend to dwell,” McGuire said.

Although women like to dwell on situations, they are more apt to look to close friends, teammates or family members for help.

Being involved is important but learning to manage everything is just as crucial. On campus there are plenty of resources students can take advantage of that can help them stay involved without feeling overwhelmed. The Academic Support Services Center is located in room 109 in Hubbard Hall. There they can offer academic counseling and personal counseling.
